๐Ÿ’• The Love Hypothesis — A Soft Love That Stays With You

Content warning: I breifly describe a harassment scene(non-graphic).Please read carefully.

I picked The Love Hypothesis and It Starts With Us thinking I'd just try it. But really? It was one of the best accidental picks ever. The book stayed with me - not only as a romance, but as a little reminder of the type of love I hope one day.

๐Ÿ“– The Story (With No Spoilers)

The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood tracks Olive, a neurotic, overthinky PhD candidate, and Adam Carlsen, the brooding, gruff professor with a secret heart of gold. They are placed in a pretend-dating arrangement (yes, that cliche — but just go with it, it's cute), and all of it begins to come apart at the seams in the most messy, adorable, and emotionally fulfilling manner.

At first, the book was a little slow, like it was just getting going. But once I got into it, it was like watching a movie in my head. I could see them in the lab, I could hear Olive's cringe-worthy rants, and I could feel the tension building.

๐Ÿง  Characters That Felt So Real

๐Ÿงช Olive

Dumb and adorable, in the best sense of the word. She's always in a state of panic, ranting, overthinking, making a mess of decisions — but isn't that all of us? She's intelligent yet uncertain, confused yet resolute, and her path of falling for Adam felt so natural and relatable, particularly for students mired in their academic bubble.

Adam

Honestly? He's the guy 80% of us fantasize about. Calm, patient, polite, always letting Olive have her way — and when he falls in love with her, it's not loud or melodramatic. It's slow, steady, genuine. From the jokes about black coffee to his small gestures to always be there for her, Adam was just right.

๐ŸŒธ Favourite Moments (Spoiler-Free-ish)
  • When Olive kisses Adam to make a point — and everything turns around afterward.
  • Their stealthy Wednesday meetups, Adam waiting patiently even when she's running behind.
  • The hotel scene (you know which one) — emotional, tender, and beautifully penned.
  • The "Ik houd van je, Adam" moment — heart melt pure.
  • And that intense scene where Olive plays the tape of Tom harrasing her — it struck like a storm. It was the evidence of what Tom truly was. When Adam listens to it and sees what Olive endured, I pictured him staring at the phone, jaw dropped in shock and rage. It wasn't an emotional thing — it was the point where everything changed. Olive's courage, Adam's loyalty, and the subdued justice of it all packed a punch.
Also, do not forget Malcolm and Ahn — the friend bestie pair everyone needs. Malcolm's chill vibes and Ahn's pushy-but-love bestie position complemented the entire story so nicely.

๐Ÿ’ฌ The Writing & Romance

It’s soft, a little cheesy at times (yes, I’m talking about the sunscreen scene), but honestly? That’s what made it feel real. The small details — like Olive noticing Adam's scent, or their awkward silences — made it more than just a romance. It felt like watching two people slowly discover they matter to each other.

๐ŸŒŸ My Final Thoughts
  • Was it predictable? Yes.

  • Did I mind? Not even a bit.

  • It was comforting in the best way, like knowing what’s coming but still waiting 200 pages for that first kiss.

  • If I could change anything, I’d want more — how they actually date, how Olive balances research and love, how their story continues beyond the final page.Because I wasn’t ready for it to end.

๐Ÿ’Œ Would I Recommend It?

Absolutely. If you:

  • Love romcoms and soft love stories

  • Enjoy a bit of awkwardness that makes your heart race

  • Need a fictional man to set the bar too high (hi, Adam)

Then The Love Hypothesis is your next read.
And yes — I’ll be rereading it, probably again and again.

Rating: Sweet Love / 5 ❤️
